Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT)

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) is a joint research centre constituted by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and three Madrid universities: Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), and Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). It was created in 2007 and since 2010 the ICMAT is located on the UAM Cantoblanco campus (Madrid, Spain).

The ICMAT conducts research in all branches of mathematics, offers doctoral and post-doctoral training courses, organises international events and promotes dissemination activities.

In 2011 and in 2015, the ICMAT was awarded the Severo Ochoa Excellence label. In May 2016, the ICMAT became a member of ERCOM (European Research Centres on Mathematics), the EMS (European Mathematical Society) Committee. Since its foundation, ICMAT researchers have been awarded a total of ten ERC grants.

Key Facts of ICMAT

Total number of ERC Grants awarded as of December 2019.
Publications under first decile within 2019, 40% of total publications are in the best 10% journals in the field.
Laboratories launched in 2016 for a period of four years: Kari Astala Lab; Ignacio Cirac Lab; Simon Donaldson / Nigel Hitchin Lab and Charles Fefferman Lab.
55 predoctoral and 50 postdoctoral researchers were in the institution during year 2019.

The Severo Ochoa program has been fundamental for the ICMAT, being the basis for our projects of postdoctoral researchers, Ph. D. students and visitors. But also providing financial support for our Laboratories in Fluid Mechanics, Quantum Computing, Geometry and Topology and Harmonic Analysis.
